For the Protégé: Growing Up Means Stepping Out
Protégés confide in mentors with personal dreams, concerns, and questions. Career development is often discussed throughout the mentor relationship as well. The mentor serves as a source of influence for the protégé. The mentor has obtained more experience than the protégé and he/she provides insight and intellect that the protégé gleans and uses in the future. The protégé must then decipher which tools to use to become successful. There are several stages of the mentor-protégé relationship that lead to the protégé’s career. The mentor and the protégé experience initiation, cultivation, separation and redefinition with each other. They must develop a relationship, maintain that foundation, and either go their separate ways or remain in each other’s lives. When mentors provide proper guidance to the protégés, the protégés often have better chances to benefit from the career choices they make. Mentoring allows the growth of self-confidence among protégés that are preparing to branch out into their careers. Lifespan theories are explained and show the ways the adult develops and changes throughout this article. Not only do individuals develop personally but they also do so professionally. The mentor guides the protégé through the professional growth process and often the mentor continues to support the protégé.

Mentoring
Coach...Counselor...Teacher...Role Model
The importance of mentoring is very evident .As you enter the work force you can see how importing networking is in your professional career. Having a good mentor will allow you become connected to individuals who posses knowledge in the industry you are trying to enter.
In this process, mentees are able to receive knowledge of the company and the industry, which will help elevate stress that comes with entering a new work environment .In my recent mentorship experience, Mr. Perez introduced me to numerous individuals in the industry that offered support. Having a support system in the form of a mentor allows you to not have to learn everything from experience but instead, now you can pick up things from observations.
Companies should invest in the future by developing young workers who can be part of and carry on the culture. Mentorship programs need be offered by Human Resource departments and should be mandatory for upper level management to take on the responsibility of mentoring. Mentoring is training in the form of coaching and it teaches young future professionals a lot about business.

The purpose of my internship is to assist the Associate Commissioner and his staff with the day- to-day operations of the department as well as with preparations for special events and championships.

My Mentorship Plan:
My project is to assist Ruben Perez in the event management aspect of the SIAC 2013 basketball tournament. I will help market, promote and help put together the entire tournament. I will work with the other volunteers to identify ways to create brand awareness for the SIAC. To do this my team will attend numerous events so we can launch our gorilla marketing and social media campaigns.

Summary
The reason I choose to do my internship with the SIAC is because it gave me an opportunity to explore the sports industry from the business and event management side. This experience gave me the chance to learn about SIAC, the sports management industry and also about myself. Throughout this process, I enjoyed linking my classroom knowledge to the real business world. Keeping a journal of my experiences has allowed me to capture my experience working with Mr. Perez.
The process of keeping a journal of my experience has helped me grasp what my internship experience really offered. I believe that during this experience I experienced a lot of growth and development. Before the internship my organizational skills were not up to par but now I am now a more organized person. I now realize the importance of agendas and calendars and the impact they have on time management skills. My communication and networking skills have also been positively affected by this experience. Reaching out to individuals in the industry gave me the confidence I needed to build relationships with key individuals.
One thing that I have learned about the organization is that the SIAC is very small and they do not receive a lot of financial support. Because the SIAC lacked major financial supporters, the employee salaries are not that high. I have come to the realization that jobs in the sports industry are competitive and may not pay as well as other industries. Knowing this I still want to pursue a career in the sports industry because I have a passion for the business of sports. Because the SIAC is located in Atlanta, I believe this will be a good starting point for me. I believe that I could bring my background of sales and marketing to a team that lacks significant sponsorship. As started before, because there is a need for sponsorship, a successful sponsorship program will have a great impact on the SIAC.
